WhatsApp Introduces Usernames to Boost Privacy
WhatsApp is rolling out a new privacy feature: usernames. This change allows users to connect with others without revealing their phone numbers. The goal is to improve user privacy and offer more control over who sees your personal information.
What Are WhatsApp Usernames?

Usernames on WhatsApp will work similarly to those on platforms like Telegram and Signal. Instead of sharing your phone number, you can share a unique username. This adds an extra layer of privacy—especially useful in large groups or online communities.
Phone Numbers Still Required

While usernames offer a new way to connect, phone numbers are still needed for account creation and verification. This means you’ll still need your phone number to register and log in, but you won’t always need to share it with others.
No Notifications for Username Changes
If you change your username, your contacts won’t be notified. The only way someone will see your new username is by checking your profile directly. This gives users the freedom to change usernames without alerting their entire contact list.
Reducing Spam and Unwanted Messages

Usernames may help reduce spam and unwanted messages. Since users won’t need to share phone numbers publicly, it becomes harder for spammers to target individuals directly.
Still in Beta Testing

The feature is currently in beta testing. Developers are working on the interface and performance, and it may become available to all users in a future update.
