X Chat: Twitter’s Big Move to Challenge WhatsApp in Messaging

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has rolled out a new feature called X chat, marking a serious shift into the instant messaging space. The feature is part of Elon Musk’s broader plan to transform X into an all-in-one “everything app.” With X chat, the platform moves beyond public posts and trending topics, offering users a private, real-time messaging experience that closely resembles apps like WhatsApp and Telegram.

X Chat formerly known as Twitter have Big Move to Challenge WhatsApp and Telegram in Messaging

Xchat is designed to give users more than just simple direct messages. Among its early features are end-to-end encryption, voice and video calls, file sharing, group chats, and status updates. The layout is clean and familiar, with features like read receipts, last seen, and emoji reactions. Integration with users’ existing X profiles allows for seamless communication, while a contact sync feature (still in testing) hints at future expansion into phone-based messaging.

While WhatsApp remains dominant in the global chat space with over 2 billion users, Xchat is positioning itself differently.

It’s deeply connected to the X platform, allowing users to move from reading a post to starting a private conversation instantly. This smooth transition between public and private interaction gives X chat an edge in engagement. If adoption picks up, especially among creators, communities, and businesses already active on X, the app could become a serious alternative to WhatsApp — especially for users who want social networking and messaging in one place.

The rollout is gradual, with updates expected in the coming months. But X chat clearly signals that the messaging space just got a new, ambitious competitor.
